My First Interview... wish me luck!

December 15th, 2008 at 05:45 am

I have my first interview tomorrow afternoon for a math teacher in a magnet high school. The school is an inner-city school, but it has a good mix of kids because it's a magnet (a magnet school has specialized programs to attract students from around the city. This school's magnet is computer science.)

I'm excited and nervous about the interviewing process because I haven't done it in more than 6 years!!! If you have them, throw some tips my way. I'm sure I'll be Google-ing all day long! Probably working some math problems, too Wink

Good luck! My tip is too ask lots of questions. Not to scare you since all magnets are different, but my sister taught at an elementary magnet...principals were not supportive and discipline of students was a major problem. I think had she done some observing prior to accepting and asked more questions she may have realized these problems ahead of time.

Just my opinion. I sure hope this works out for you!

Good luck! Hopefully this is a magnet school with lots of parental support! Let us know how it goes. Sending warm wishes your way.

In being honest, I'm expecting the worst at the school. I hope I'll have the opportunity to do different interviews at different schools, but times are tight and what is usually a critical shortage position has little openings. Frustrating, to say the least.

Good luck! It's hard not to be nervous, especially when you haven't interviewed in many years. I have the same problem.

Good luck! Just be yourself. Be ready to tell them how you'd handle difficult situations (i.e. parents on the warpath, disruptive student(s), etc.)

I'm a teacher too...and I always researched the mission statement of the school district and then explained how it paralleled with my philosophy of teaching. I always gave this answer when they asked me why I wanted to work for that district. They eat that stuff up.
