#$@! Van - Mechanics, please comment

June 5th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Something is shorting the battery out, and I am no mechanic. I do have a Haynes book, and I also have a volt/ohm meter, so I guess I'll get to work looking for it. We are supposed to go on vacation at the end of the month and I can't drive 600 miles with the worry of breaking down! And I am determined to go on vacation, as it will be our first and the kids are excited (plus, food and board are free).

    alternator?

No mechanic and not sure that is what you mean. But if the battery won't stay charged, that would be my guess why.

Hopefully the mechanics will give you better advice. Big Grin

Around here we have Autozone auto parts stores. If you drive up there they will bring out a whichydoodle machine that will tell you something about your battery. I'm no mechanic either. Can you tell? Big Grin

Yes. Autozone (or the like) will kindly test your battery and your alternator-no charge. You might check that your cables are tight and getting a good connection. Will it just not start (or it just clicks when you start it like the battery is dead?)

It starts, but driving down the road a surge goes through the radio and the dash cluster. I'm sure by now it is frying computer components. Fabulous.

I am going to take it to Auto Zone. There is something shorting out the battery, as this is the 2nd one to replace in about as many months. It could be the alternator, but I've replaced the idle air control motor and the evaporator core, so maybe something there is doing it. I hope it isn't the evaporator core, as that takes ripping out the dash to look at. GRRRR!
